The Black Lion of Pan-Africanism

Marcus Garvey built the largest Black political organization in history — the Universal Negro Improvement Association — with 6 million members at its peak. A Leo who understood that Black liberation required economic independence and cultural pride, he created the template for every Black empowerment movement that followed, from Civil Rights to Black Power to Rastafarianism.

Leo Legacy

  • UNIA: 6 million members — the largest Black political organization in history
  • Black Star Line: Steamship company to facilitate African repatriation and trade
  • Pan-African vision: Inspired Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela, and Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Deportation: US government deported him for mail fraud — he became a martyr

Garvey’s Leo vision burned so bright it illuminated movements that came decades after his death.

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”
